R20, ID and Accessibility: What North Island Casino Visitors Should Check
A smooth casino visit begins before the door. In Auckland and Hamilton, visitors need to understand the casino age rule, carry acceptable identification and confirm the complete accessible route that fits their needs.
The casino rule is R20
The New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs states that patrons must be 20 years of age to enter a casino. SkyCity Hamilton's official age guidance also identifies its casino as R20. A person who cannot provide acceptable evidence of age may be refused entry to the gaming area.
This is stricter than a general “18+” warning. Turning 18 does not make someone eligible to enter a New Zealand casino gaming area.
Ask about ID before travelling
Bring a current, original government-issued photo document. A passport or New Zealand driver licence is often the clearest option, but the venue controls its entry process. Overseas visitors and anyone carrying a less common document should contact the casino directly and ask whether it will be accepted.
Do not assume that a phone photograph, photocopy, expired document or another person's confirmation will satisfy an evidence-of-age check. Confirm the rules rather than risking a wasted journey.
For a concise cross-venue reference, see this casino age, ID and accessibility guide for Auckland and Hamilton. Recheck any time-sensitive detail against the venue's official information on the day.
Accessibility is a route, not a label
A venue may describe itself as accessible while an individual visitor still needs more detail. Think through the entire arrival path:
- the route from accessible parking, taxi drop-off or public transport;
- step-free entry and lifts between the required levels;
- door widths and space for a mobility device;
- accessible toilets and seating locations;
- lighting, noise and sensory conditions;
- how to contact staff for assistance.
Call ahead with specific questions. If a lift, entrance or parking area is temporarily unavailable, ask for an alternative route and where assistance can be requested on arrival.
Separate access planning from gambling decisions
After entry logistics are clear, set a fixed time limit and an entertainment budget. Essential money for transport, accommodation, food, bills and savings should remain separate. Never borrow to continue gambling and never increase the limit in an attempt to recover a loss.
Arrange the return journey in advance. Alcohol and fatigue can affect both gambling and driving decisions. Keep enough money outside the gambling budget to get home safely.
Pre-visit checklist

- I have confirmed that my photo ID is acceptable.
- I checked today's opening and entry information directly.
- I confirmed the full accessible arrival route I need.
- I set separate time and spending limits.
- I protected transport and other essential money.
- I arranged a safe return journey.
