Nominal or Inflation-Protected? The Question Hidden Inside Today's Bond Yields

Two official numbers from August 14, 2026 describe very different promises. The U.S. Treasury reported a 5.25% nominal yield for a thirty-year Treasury and a 3.00% real yield for a thirty-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Security, or TIPS. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that consumer prices in July were 3.4% higher than a year earlier. None of these figures alone identifies the right bond. They measure different things.

A conventional Treasury promises fixed dollar payments. Its nominal yield describes the return in dollars under the calculation's assumptions, but it does not say what those dollars will buy. TIPS approach the problem from the other direction. Their principal is adjusted using the Consumer Price Index, and their stated real yield is measured above that inflation adjustment. This gives investors a contractual link to the CPI, not immunity from every personal increase in living costs. A household's expenses can change differently from the national index.

The gap between comparable nominal and real Treasury yields is often used as a market-based gauge of expected inflation. Using the August 14 thirty-year figures, the simple difference was about 2.25 percentage points. That is informative, but it is not a clean forecast. Inflation-risk premiums, liquidity differences, and market supply and demand can also affect the gap. It should therefore be treated as a price containing several ingredients, not a precise prediction that inflation will average exactly 2.25%.

TIPS also retain ordinary bond risks. Their market prices move when real yields change, and long maturities can be volatile. Taxable investors may owe federal tax on inflation adjustments before receiving the principal in cash, while account type and personal tax circumstances can change the result. Conventional Treasuries avoid the CPI adjustment but may lose purchasing power when inflation exceeds what was priced at purchase. Neither structure makes uncertainty disappear; each assigns it differently.

The useful decision begins with the obligation. A fixed dollar payment on a known date may be naturally matched with a nominal bond of similar maturity. Retirement spending, tuition, or another cost that is likely to rise with broad prices may justify considering inflation protection, provided the chosen maturity and tax treatment fit. The lasting question is not whether nominal or real yield is universally higher. It is whether the bond defines success in the same unit as the future need: dollars, or the purchasing power of those dollars.
